SliTaz : Good Things Come in “Small” Packages

September 18th, 2008

I installed Virtualbox in arch today, So just for fun I installed SliTaz in it. SliTaz is a Micro Linux distro. The new version or “Cooking” is less then 30mb, but it includes software like MPlayer, Firefox, Lost IRC Client, JWM, gFTP and many other softwares :) .

Heres what a clean SliTaz interface looks like

Dropbox : More then a File Sharing Servive

September 17th, 2008

Yesterday, Kalpik Nigam @ #think-digit on irc.freenode.net invited me to use Dropbox.

I took a Tour available on the website, and i quite liked the Web Interface. I Quickly downloaded the software,Fortunately it was in the Arch AUR, So i only had to to yaourt nautilus-dropbox to install it ;) i had to install nautilus too, but as i had never installed gnome, i had to download 20MB of other dependencies too :( now, taking about the interface

It Merges COMPLETELY with nautilus, here are some screenies

And this has something called Shared Folder, where the people you invite can collaboratively upload and edit file, Dropbox even saves snapshots of the file, which can be a large boon for the programmers

Ratpoison

Days with ArchLinux

September 15th, 2008

So, its been around a month since i shifted to ArchLinux and it has been quite a nice experience mainly because i was used to being spoon-fed by Ubuntu and Fedora and was fed off. It was quite hard to set it because my /etc/rc.d always seemed to get screwed when i edited it. The first application i installed was irssi. Then i downloaded xorg, xfce, rtorrent etc.

Log:

  • Login the live arch cd, /arch/setup
  • Format and partition HDD
  • Configure system files
  • Boot Freshly installed system, *Grub menu looks nice*
  • OMG, No GUI!!! :-(
  • pacman -Sy irssi
  • pacman -Syu
  • Started irssi, /join #think-digit
  • So, it turns out i have to install xorg :-|
  • i decided to install xfce4 along with it
  • pacman -S xorg xfce4
  • Damn, doesnt seem to work
  • aah, locals problem
  • /join #archlinux
  • Ok, locale-gen
  • Damn, still doesnt work
  • Reading WiKi
  • pacman -S hal
  • startxfce4
  • Wow, Xfce started :-) w0000t!!!!
  • pacman -S nvidia
  • ok, i can play Urban Terror now, /me PWNs in UrT
  • pacman -S compiz-fusion fusion-icon
  • restarted x, now i can even run compiz :D
  • installed ratpoison for a change
  • pacman -S ratpoison
  • confusing, had to kill x to quit >_<
  • Asked pulsar @ #think-digit for help
  • Now ratpoison is in my ~/.xinitrc :-)
